From “Positive Deviants” to Post-dissident Liberals: A Study of the Transformation of the Concept of “Islands of Positive Deviation”

This article attempts to trace the transformation of the formerly sociological concept of “islands of positive deviation” into a component of liberal political language from early 1989 to the early 1990s. During this period, the concept evolved from expert discourse critiquing late socialist society, based on both reformist socialist and anti-modernist arguments, into one of the main concepts in the political language of Slovak post-dissident liberals.

From Slavic Leader to National Ruler: A Modern Discursive Construction of the Early Medieval Rulership of Pribina († 861)

Pribina was a Slavic leader of unknown origin from the 9th century who was expelled by the Moravian prince (dux) Mojmir I. However, his rank in the territory north of the Danube before exile is a matter of an ages-long scholarly debate. This article presents an analysis of historiographic discourse which has resulted in the national scholarly construction of an early medieval, hypothetical Slovak/Nitrian rulership of Pribina.

Slováci a Maďari: Tisícročné manželstvo

Slováci a Maďari žijú vedľa seba dlhé storočia. Vyše tisíc rokov obývali spoločné Uhorské kráľovstvo. Od konca prvej svetovej vojny žijú ako susedia v rôznych štátoch, ktoré oddelila novovzniknutá štátna hranica. V multietnickom Uhorsku popri Slovákoch a Maďaroch žili Nemci, Rumuni, Rusíni, Židia, Chorváti a Srbi. Spoločne zažívali veľké udalosti stredovekých aj novovekých dejín. Uhorských kráľov i Habsburgovcov, turecké nebezpečenstvo, protihabsburgské povstania či osvietenské reformy. V 19. storočí sa Uhorsko menilo na moderný štát.

“The Wild Underground Extreme of Human Rights and Ecological Activities”: Czechoslovak, Czech and Slovenian Hardcore Punk Fanzine Cultures from the 1980s to the Present

This article compares Czechoslovak, Czech and Slovenian hardcore punk fanzine scenes from the 1980s up to the present, emphasising in particular their connections to the various anti-authoritarian movements with which they share the common idea of do-it-yourself (DIY). The comparison is embodied in the histories of above-mentioned scenes and in the context of their legacies. Fanzines are the author’s main sources mainly because cultural and political activities were connected on their pages.

Momentous historical events have a great importance upon formation of national ideology regardless of political and social character of society. This is especially true for events, which, in a significant matter, contributed to formation of independent new states. The submitted paper is devoted to genesis of commemoration and celebration of happenings leading to foundation of Czechoslovakian Republic and to the their impact upon the official ideology of Czechoslovakian state.

The study applies the French term "sortie de guerre" (exiting the war) to the issues at the end of the Great War in the Habsburg monarchy, Central-Eastern Europe and in Slovakia, which was part of this area. It pays special attention to the issues of the minorities and the search for the possible ways in which they could be protected by international law and the treaties signed after the end of World War I. Exiting the war for Slovaks cannot be considered from a narrow local perspective.

Typically, aid for the poor in Hungary was the responsibility of church representatives and social elites. However, Christian teachings only requested support for people in need in the form of alms, not permanent provisions. The level of care for the poor in the country adhered to this understanding until the second half of the 18th century when social support and health care became the agenda of the state. During the Enlightenment era, Hungarian elites started to address these issues under the guidance of the Emperor. The initiative was influenced, but not regulated by Maria Theresa.

The study tries to show common Czechoslovak reasons for crisis of the democratic regime after the Munich agreement on September 30, 1938 as well as some Slovak specifics in this matter. As for the Slovak specifics, one can see them in an dominant position of Hlinka´s Slovak People´s Party, an Catholic-conservative party with a tendency to authoritative stile of a government a long time before Munich, a weak position of the former dominant Czechoslovak parties (first of all Agrarians and Social Democrats) and a state of Slovak society in after-Munich time.

The paper deals with the process of establishment and professionalization of logic and methodology of sciences in Slovakia after 1918.
